It all dates back to 1854, when Herbert Vigne founded a freehold agricultural village on his farm called Weltevreden. He divided the farm, kept two small portions for himself and bequeathed the remainder of the farm to the proprietors of the erven as commonage, naming it “GREYTON”. Named after Sir George Grey, the then Governor of the
Cape. J.G.Rietz (senior surveyor at the time) designed and set the layout of the village (which essentially remained the same, with only a few changes and additions as time passed by). To date, there seems to be no reason for establishing Greyton and it remains obscure, but nevertheless, Herbert Vigne left us with a village of unsurpassed beauty and enchantment. Greyton, just past Genadendal , lies in the shadow of the Riviersonderend Mountains, with 2 small rivers running through it. Tranquil country lanes are lined with huge oak trees, while 'lei' irrigation water gurgles down canals past charming thatched cottages.. There are coffee shops, restaurants, antique and craft shops, artist studios and art galleries, as well as a popular Saturday-morning market. Greyton Nature Reserve- offers numerous walking trails, ranging from 1 hour to full day hikes, viewing fynbos, wild flowers and the local bird life tel: 028 254 9414 Boesmanskloof Trail leads through a folded mountain valley to a summit near McGregor.
